Minister’s Musings

Ten Years! I officially started as the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta in August of 2009.  My official start date was August 1st– and we were busy unpacking boxes with my mother and her partner in a house we were renting on Cove Ave– next door neighbors to Julian and Leah.  (Still the best neighbors we have ever had.) I received my first pastoral phone call that Sunday– and I remember scrambling to try and find the phone. And then calling Pam Strother to help me fill in the details about who had called me and about what and what exactly I could and should do about it.  (Thank you, Pam.) We ate dinner with the members of the Search Committee that Monday night at Mary Ruhoff’s house. And we were greeted by a chalk welcome on the sidewalk.   My first day in the office as August 5th.  And I preached my first sermon as your minister...Read More >

Sawdust From the Board

August 1, 2019 Thanks again to all that former board president (and now clerk) Karen Palmer has done for UUSO during the past four years. The baton is now officially in my hands and I will do my best to live up to the honor.  The first board meeting of the 2019-20 fiscal year was held on July 24. The first part of the meeting was open to all. After the open part of the meeting, we met for a less formal retreat. During the open meeting, we took care of some annual record-keeping, like setting the dates for the Congregational meetings, which will be on October 27 and May 17. The minister’s annual self-assessment was reviewed and will be published in the newsletter. The Treasurer reviewed, corrected, or explained all budget lines that reported over 2 percent of their anticipated expense. Board meetings will always be on the 4th Wednesday of the month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The exception to...Read More >

Answers to Minister’s Agreement Questions

The following are questions that seemed to be left unanswered after our June 2 conversation with the congregation about the Minister’s Agreement.   Rev. Craig and Trustees Arlana Young & Karen Palmer worked together to provide these answers. If you have further thoughts or questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with Rev. Craig or any Board member and we’ll do our best to provide you with further clarity.  The plan going forward is for Trustee Rosemary Summers and Rev. Craig to draw up a draft update to the current Minister’s Agreement utilizing the congregation’s input and the new UUA/UUMA recommendations. After this first draft is reviewed by the Board, we will host another conversation about the Minister’s Agreement with the Congregation around mid or later September.  We will attempt to further clarify questions and obtain more input which will inform the negotiation with the Minister and Board toward a final updated Agreement. Covenant

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta is a covenantal community. While we hold many beliefs, we are committed to each other, to our shared search for truth and meaning, and to our work towards building the beloved community. As our covenant, we commit to the following.   We get involved and help where we can.   We strive to be open, honest, and respectful.   We are generous with our time and our support for this institution and each other.   We actively welcome and encourage diversity while seeking shared understanding and common ground.   We recognize that we will not always agree, but we are committed to staying engaged and in right relationship.   We honor our commitments; if we can’t, we communicate that.   We believe that problems are best addressed person to person and when an issue has not been resolved directly we will ask for assistance.   We respect and maintain personal boundaries while still promoting...Read More >
